Understanding Your Pregnancy More Clearly
A positive pregnancy test is an important first step, but doesn’t tell you everything. To protect your health and help you make fully informed choices, it’s essential to confirm your pregnancy through an ultrasound.
At Amnion Women’s Center, we offer no-cost, confidential ultrasounds for qualified patients. A licensed nurse performs each scan to ensure you receive high-quality, professional care.
Why an Ultrasound Matters
An ultrasound can reveal critical information about your pregnancy that a test alone cannot provide. During your appointment, your nurse will help you confirm:
- Viability: Whether the pregnancy is developing normally and if there’s a detectable heartbeat. Because many pregnancies end naturally in early miscarriage, this information is key before making any decisions.
- Gestational Age: How far along you are, which can affect what options are available to you. For example, medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.
- Location: Whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus. In rare cases, a pregnancy may develop elsewhere, such as in the fallopian tube (an ectopic pregnancy), which requires immediate medical attention.
Your nurse will review your results, answer your questions, and ensure you have accurate information about your next steps.
Types of Ultrasounds
At Amnion, we use two types of scans to provide the clearest possible picture of your pregnancy:
- Transvaginal Ultrasound: This scan uses a wand-like device called a transducer to produce a more detailed image in early pregnancy. It helps confirm viability, detect a heartbeat, and accurately measure gestational age.
- Abdominal Ultrasound: This scan is performed by placing gel on your abdomen and moving a handheld transducer across your stomach. It is commonly used later in pregnancy when the fetus is more easily visible.
Your nurse will determine which scan type is appropriate for your stage of pregnancy and ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process.
A Supportive, Compassionate Environment
After your scan, you’ll meet with a nurse to discuss your results and what comes next. You’ll have time to ask questions, explore your options, and learn about available resources, all at no cost.
